What Causes That Rotten Egg Smell in Your Water?
You turn on the faucet and immediately notice it — a sulfur-like smell that resembles rotten eggs. It is one of the most common water quality complaints Houston homeowners report, and while it is rarely dangerous, it is almost always a sign that something in your plumbing system needs attention.
The smell comes from hydrogen sulfide gas (H₂S), which is produced when sulfur-reducing bacteria break down organic matter in an oxygen-deprived environment. In residential plumbing, these bacteria thrive inside corroding pipes, stagnant water heaters, and aging galvanized steel lines — all of which are extremely common in Houston’s older housing stock.
Hot Water Only vs. All Faucets: Narrowing the Source
The first step in diagnosing the problem is determining when and where the smell occurs.
If the smell is only in hot water, the most likely culprit is your water heater. The magnesium anode rod inside the tank reacts with sulfate in Houston’s water supply, creating hydrogen sulfide. Replacing the anode rod with an aluminum or zinc alloy rod often solves this problem.
If the smell is in both hot and cold water, the source is likely your pipes themselves. Corroding galvanized steel pipes create the perfect environment for sulfur bacteria to colonize. As the interior pipe walls break down, bacteria feed on the rust and mineral deposits, producing hydrogen sulfide as a byproduct.
If only one faucet smells, the issue may be localized — a rarely used fixture with stagnant water in the trap, or a single corroded pipe section feeding that fixture.
Why Houston Homes Are Especially Prone to This Problem
Houston’s water supply and housing characteristics make sulfur smells more common here than in many other cities. Here is why:
Hard water and high mineral content. Houston’s municipal water contains elevated levels of sulfate, chloride, and dissolved minerals. While safe to drink, these minerals accelerate corrosion inside older pipes and feed the bacteria that produce hydrogen sulfide.
Galvanized steel pipes in older homes. Tens of thousands of Houston homes built before the mid-1980s still have their original galvanized steel plumbing. These pipes corrode from the inside out, creating the rough, mineral-rich surfaces where sulfur bacteria thrive.
Warm climate year-round. Bacteria grow faster in warm water, and Houston’s ground temperatures keep water lines warmer than homes in northern states. This means bacterial colonies establish themselves more quickly and produce more noticeable odors.
Stagnant water in unused lines. Houston’s sprawling homes often have guest bathrooms, outdoor faucets, or secondary kitchen lines that go unused for weeks. Standing water in corroding pipes is an ideal breeding ground for sulfur bacteria.
Is Sulfur-Smelling Water Dangerous?
In most cases, hydrogen sulfide in residential water at the concentrations found in Houston homes is not a health hazard. The smell is noticeable at extremely low concentrations — as little as 0.5 parts per million — long before it reaches levels that could cause health concerns.
However, the rotten egg smell is often a warning sign of bigger plumbing problems:
- Active pipe corrosion — If your pipes are corroding enough to support sulfur bacteria, they are also developing weak spots that will eventually leak
- Rust contamination — Corroded pipes shed rust particles into your water, causing discoloration and staining
- Reduced water pressure — Mineral buildup and corrosion narrow the inside diameter of pipes, restricting flow
- Potential lead exposure — In homes with very old galvanized pipes, lead solder joints can leach into water as pipes corrode

Quick Fixes vs. Permanent Solutions
There are several approaches to addressing sulfur smells in your water, ranging from temporary fixes to permanent solutions.
Temporary Fixes
Flush the system. Run all faucets for 5–10 minutes to clear stagnant water from the lines. This can temporarily reduce the smell but will not address the root cause.
Replace the water heater anode rod. If the smell is isolated to hot water, switching from a magnesium anode rod to an aluminum-zinc alloy rod reduces the chemical reaction that creates hydrogen sulfide. Cost is typically $150–$300 installed.
Increase water heater temperature. Raising the temperature to 140°F can kill some sulfur bacteria in the tank. However, this increases scalding risk and energy costs, so it is not a long-term recommendation for families with children.
The Permanent Solution: Repiping
If the smell persists across multiple fixtures, returns after flushing, or is accompanied by discolored water or low pressure, the problem is almost certainly corroding pipes. No amount of flushing, filtration, or chemical treatment will fix pipes that are breaking down from the inside.
