What a Houston Repipe Actually Looks Like
Most homeowners considering a whole-house repipe have never seen one done. The process can sound intimidating — replacing every water supply line in your home in just one to two days. What does the old plumbing actually look like when it comes out? What does the new system look like when it goes in? And how much disruption should you really expect?
We have completed hundreds of repipe projects across the Greater Houston area, and the transformations speak for themselves. Here is a look at what we typically find inside Houston homes and what the finished result looks like.
Project 1: 1970s Ranch Home in Katy — Galvanized to PEX
The problem: The homeowners had lived with gradually declining water pressure for years. Showers had become weak, and running the dishwasher while someone showered reduced flow to a trickle. The home still had its original galvanized steel pipes from 1974.
What we found: When we opened the walls and cut into the old galvanized pipes, the interior was almost completely choked with rust and mineral scale. Pipes that originally had a three-quarter-inch interior diameter had less than a quarter inch of open space remaining. In some sections near the water heater, the buildup was so severe that we could barely push a pencil through the opening. The homeowners had no idea how restricted their pipes had become — the decline had been so gradual over 50 years that they had adjusted to it as normal.
The solution: We replaced the entire supply system with PEX-A piping run from a central manifold. Each fixture received its own dedicated home run line, eliminating the old trunk-and-branch layout where every fixture shared the same narrowing pipes. The manifold was installed in the garage utility area for easy future access and maintenance.
The result: Water pressure throughout the home improved dramatically. The homeowners described it as having a completely different house. Showers were strong and consistent, multiple fixtures could run simultaneously without pressure drops, and the rusty tint that had become their normal water color disappeared entirely. The entire project was completed in a single day.
Project 2: 1980s Two-Story in Sugar Land — Copper with Pinhole Leaks
The problem: This Sugar Land family had dealt with three pinhole leaks in 18 months, each requiring emergency plumber visits, drywall repair, and cleanup. Their homeowner insurance had already paid two claims and warned that further claims could affect their coverage. The home had original copper pipes from 1985.
What we found: The copper pipes showed widespread pitting corrosion, particularly on hot water lines. Green patina and white mineral deposits were visible at joints throughout the attic and wall cavities. Several sections that had not yet leaked showed visible thinning and early-stage pinholes that would have failed within months. The damage was consistent with decades of exposure to Houston chloramine-treated water and hard water conditions.
The solution: We replaced all copper supply lines with PEX-A, maintaining the existing fixture locations while improving the routing to reduce the total amount of pipe in the attic (where temperature extremes accelerate corrosion). Hot and cold manifolds were installed to provide balanced pressure to both floors.
The result: No more leak anxiety. The homeowners went from dreading every water stain on the ceiling to complete confidence in their plumbing. The insurance concern was resolved — with new piping throughout, the risk profile of the home changed entirely. Water quality improved as well, with the slight metallic taste from corroding copper completely eliminated.
Project 3: 1960s Home in Pearland — Mixed Pipe Materials
The problem: This Pearland home had been through multiple partial repairs over the decades. The original 1963 galvanized pipes had been partially replaced with copper in the 1980s, and a bathroom addition in the 1990s used CPVC. The result was a patchwork of three different pipe materials connected with various transition fittings — each connection point a potential failure point. Water quality varied by fixture, and pressure was inconsistent throughout the house.
What we found: The remaining galvanized sections were heavily corroded and nearly blocked. The copper-to-galvanized transition fittings showed severe galvanic corrosion — the dissimilar metals had been actively corroding each other for over 30 years. The CPVC sections had become brittle and showed hairline cracks at several joints. Essentially, every part of this plumbing system was failing in its own way.
The solution: A complete repipe eliminated all three pipe materials and every problematic transition fitting. We installed a unified PEX-A system from a single manifold, giving the home consistent pipe material and pressure balancing throughout. The old galvanized drain vents were not part of the supply repipe but were inspected and noted for the homeowner future planning.
The result: For the first time in decades, every fixture in the home delivered clean, consistent water at uniform pressure. The homeowner said it felt like moving into a new house. The elimination of dissimilar metal connections removed the most common failure points, and the single-material system simplified any future maintenance needs.
Project 4: 1990s Home in The Woodlands — Polybutylene Replacement
The problem: The homeowners were preparing to sell their Woodlands home and learned during the pre-listing inspection that the house had polybutylene (PB) pipes. Their real estate agent advised them that PB pipes would be a red flag for buyers and could significantly reduce offers or scare away buyers entirely. Several potential buyers had already walked away from other PB homes in the neighborhood.
What we found: The gray polybutylene pipes throughout the home appeared intact on the surface, but PB deterioration happens from the inside out. Chlorine and chloramines in Houston water slowly degrade the pipe material at a molecular level, creating micro-fractures that are invisible until the pipe suddenly fails. We also found the original plastic PB fittings at connection points — these acetal fittings are the most failure-prone component of PB systems.
The solution: We replaced all polybutylene supply lines with PEX-A piping and installed a manifold system. The PB service line from the meter to the house was also replaced, eliminating PB from the entire water delivery system. We provided documentation of the complete PB removal for the homeowner to share with buyers and their agents.
The result: The home sold within three weeks of listing. The repipe documentation gave buyers confidence that the plumbing concern was fully resolved. The sellers recouped the cost of the repipe through a stronger sale price and faster closing — avoiding the price reductions that neighboring PB homes had accepted. The new owners moved in knowing they had a modern plumbing system that would last for decades.
What Every Repipe Project Has in Common
While every home is different, our repipe projects share consistent elements that Houston homeowners can expect.
Completion time: Most whole-house repipes are completed in one to two days. Single-story homes and smaller homes typically finish in one day. Larger two-story homes or homes with complex layouts may extend to two days. You will have running water by the end of each work day.
Minimal disruption: We protect your home with drop cloths, shoe covers, and careful work practices. Access points are strategically planned to minimize drywall cuts. After the repipe, we patch all access openings and leave your home clean. Many homeowners stay in their home during the entire process.
Pressure testing: Every completed repipe system is pressure tested before we close any walls. We pressurize the entire new system and monitor it to verify zero leaks at every connection and fitting. This testing happens before drywall is patched, so any issues (which are rare) can be addressed immediately.
Permit and inspection: All our repipe projects include proper City or County permits and pass required inspections. This protects you legally, ensures code compliance, and provides documentation that adds value when you sell your home.
