- Check the color: Galvanized steel is dull gray when new and becomes rougher and more uneven as it ages. Copper is copper-colored or green-patinated. PEX is flexible plastic, usually white, red, or blue.
- Use a magnet: A magnet will stick to galvanized steel but not to copper or PEX.
- Look at the joints: Galvanized pipes use threaded fittings that screw together. Copper uses soldered joints. PEX uses crimp or expansion fittings.
