How Hard Water Accelerates Pipe Corrosion in Houston Homes

What Makes Houston Water “Hard”

Hard water contains elevated levels of dissolved minerals — primarily calcium and magnesium — picked up as water moves through limestone and other mineral-rich formations underground. Houston draws its water supply from a combination of surface water (Lake Houston, Lake Livingston, and the Trinity River) and groundwater wells, and the mineral content varies depending on where you live in the metro area.

Houston water generally ranges from moderately hard to very hard, typically measuring between 100 and 200 parts per million (ppm) of calcium carbonate. Some areas served primarily by groundwater wells — particularly in north and northwest Houston — can see even higher hardness levels. By comparison, water below 60 ppm is considered soft.

Hard water is not a health hazard. It is safe to drink, cook with, and bathe in. But the dissolved minerals that make water “hard” create real problems for your home plumbing system over time — problems that accelerate as your pipes age.

How Hard Water Attacks Your Pipes from the Inside

The damage hard water causes to pipes is gradual and largely invisible until problems become serious. Here is what happens inside your plumbing over years and decades of hard water exposure.

Scale buildup narrows pipes. As hard water flows through your plumbing, dissolved calcium and magnesium gradually deposit on interior pipe walls. This mineral scale builds layer upon layer, slowly reducing the internal diameter of your pipes. A pipe that started at three-quarters of an inch in diameter can narrow to less than half an inch after 20 to 30 years of heavy scale accumulation. The result: reduced water pressure, slower flow rates, and restricted water delivery throughout your home.

Scale traps corrosive elements. Mineral deposits do not form smooth, uniform layers. They create rough, uneven surfaces with pits and crevices that trap chlorine, chloramines, and dissolved oxygen against the pipe wall. These trapped chemicals accelerate localized corrosion, eating through pipe walls from the inside. The scale that appears to be protecting the pipe is actually creating conditions that destroy it faster.

Hot water makes it worse. Mineral precipitation increases dramatically as water temperature rises. Your water heater, hot water supply lines, and fixtures that deliver hot water experience scale buildup at a much faster rate than cold water lines. This is why hot water pressure often drops before cold water pressure in aging homes — the hot water pipes are choking with deposits first.

Galvanic corrosion accelerates. When different metals connect in a plumbing system — copper pipes joined to galvanized steel, brass valves connected to iron pipes — hard water acts as an electrolyte that speeds up galvanic corrosion at these junctions. The mineral-rich water increases electrical conductivity between dissimilar metals, causing the more reactive metal (usually galvanized steel) to corrode faster. Many Houston homes have exactly this combination of metals in their plumbing.

Which Pipe Materials Suffer Most

Not all pipe materials respond to hard water the same way. Understanding how your specific pipes interact with Houston hard water helps you assess your risk.

Galvanized steel is the most vulnerable. These zinc-coated steel pipes were standard in Houston homes built from the 1940s through the 1970s. Hard water corrodes the zinc coating first, then attacks the underlying steel. Hard water scale on copper pipes tends to be less aggressive, but copper is susceptible to pitting corrosion — especially in Houston water with its chloramine disinfection. Hard water minerals can concentrate at pinhole corrosion sites, accelerating the formation of leaks. Copper pipes in Houston homes from the 1960s through 1980s commonly develop pinhole leaks after 25 to 40 years of service.

CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) does not corrode like metal pipes, but hard water scale still accumulates inside CPVC pipes, reducing flow over time. CPVC also becomes brittle with age, and the combination of reduced flow (requiring higher pressure to move water) and brittle pipe walls creates a recipe for sudden failures — particularly at joints and fittings.

PEX piping is the most resistant to hard water effects. Its smooth interior surface resists scale buildup, it does not corrode, and it maintains its flexibility throughout its lifespan. This is one reason PEX-A has become the preferred material for whole-house repipes in the Houston area.

Signs Hard Water Is Damaging Your Pipes

Because the damage happens inside your pipes where you cannot see it, you need to watch for indirect signs that hard water corrosion is progressing.

Declining water pressure. If your water pressure has gradually decreased over the years — especially at fixtures farthest from where water enters your home — scale buildup is a likely cause. This is different from sudden pressure drops (which usually indicate a leak or supply problem). Gradual, progressive pressure loss over years points to pipe narrowing from mineral deposits.

Discolored water. Rusty, brown, or orange water when you first turn on a tap (especially after the water has been off for several hours) indicates internal pipe corrosion. The discoloration comes from rust particles and mineral deposits breaking loose from deteriorating pipe walls.

White or yellowish crusty deposits around faucet aerators, showerheads, and valve connections show that minerals are precipitating out of your water. If you are seeing heavy buildup at fixtures, the same process is happening inside your pipes where you cannot see it.

Water heater problems. Hard water scale accumulates on heating elements and tank walls, reducing efficiency and shortening water heater lifespan. If you are replacing water heaters more frequently than expected (every 6 to 8 years instead of 10 to 12), hard water is likely a contributing factor — and the same minerals damaging your water heater are damaging your pipes.

Pinhole leaks. Small leaks that appear at pipe walls (not joints) are a telltale sign of internal corrosion. Hard water pitting corrosion creates these tiny perforations, and each one indicates that the pipe wall has been eaten through from the inside. Where there is one pinhole leak, more are typically developing nearby.

What Water Softeners Can and Cannot Do

Many Houston homeowners install water softeners to address hard water. Softeners work by exchanging calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions, effectively reducing mineral content before water enters your home plumbing. A properly sized and maintained softener does reduce new scale formation and can slow the progression of corrosion.

However, a water softener cannot reverse damage that has already occurred. Pipes that have accumulated years of scale buildup and corrosion do not heal when you install a softener. The existing deposits remain, continuing to restrict flow and harbor corrosion. In some cases, softened water flowing through heavily scaled pipes can actually loosen old deposits, causing temporary water quality issues as accumulated minerals break free.

A water softener makes the most sense as a protective measure for new or recently repiped plumbing. If your pipes are already corroded and restricted, a softener addresses future buildup but does nothing about the existing damage.

The Permanent Solution for Hard Water Pipe Damage

When hard water has spent decades corroding your pipes from the inside, no amount of treatment, softening, or filtration can restore them. The scale is embedded, the pipe walls are thinned, and the internal diameter is permanently reduced. At this point, a whole-house repipe is the only way to fully restore your plumbing system.
