But when temperatures drop below freezing — even for just a few hours — exposed and vulnerable pipes can freeze, crack, and burst. The hard freezes of 2021 and 2022 proved that Houston is far from immune, with thousands of homes experiencing burst pipes and catastrophic water damage.
The danger is actually greater here than in colder climates. Northern homes are built with freeze protection in mind — insulated walls, pipes routed through heated spaces, and deeper frost lines. Most Houston homes were designed for heat, not cold. Pipes often run through attics, exterior walls, and crawl spaces with minimal insulation, making them especially vulnerable when rare freezes hit.
Which Pipes Are Most at Risk in Your Houston Home
Not all pipes face equal danger during a freeze. Understanding which pipes are most vulnerable helps you focus your protection efforts where they matter most.
Attic pipes are the highest risk in Houston homes. Many homes in the Greater Houston area have water supply lines running through unconditioned attic spaces. When temperatures plunge, attics can get colder than outdoor air since they lack any heat source. During the 2021 freeze, attic pipes accounted for a significant portion of burst pipe claims across the region.
Exterior wall pipes are another common problem. Supply lines running through exterior walls — especially on north-facing sides — have limited insulation between them and the cold. Pipes serving outdoor hose bibs, kitchen sinks on exterior walls, and bathroom fixtures along outside walls all carry elevated risk.
Garage pipes often go overlooked. If your water heater sits in the garage or supply lines pass through this unheated space, those pipes are exposed during freezing weather. Most Houston garages have no insulation and offer little protection from cold air.
Outdoor pipes and irrigation lines are directly exposed to freezing temperatures. Hose bibs, sprinkler system backflow preventers, and any exposed outdoor plumbing can freeze quickly when temperatures drop below 32°F.
How Freezing Damages Pipes

Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses. A garden hose left connected to an outdoor faucet traps water in the hose bib, which can freeze and crack the fixture — or worse, allow the freeze to travel back into supply lines inside your walls. Disconnect hoses, drain them, and install insulated hose bib covers.
Know your main water shut-off location. If a pipe does burst, shutting off water quickly limits the damage from flooding. Locate your main shut-off valve now — not during an emergency. In most Houston homes, it is near the front of the house where the water line enters, or at the meter box near the street.
Service your sprinkler system. Have your irrigation system winterized before the first freeze. This involves blowing compressed air through the lines to remove standing water and shutting off the dedicated sprinkler supply valve. Backflow preventers should be insulated or drained.
What to Do During a Freeze Event
When a freeze warning is issued for the Houston area, take these immediate steps to protect your plumbing.
Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls. This allows heated indoor air to reach pipes that would otherwise be isolated in cold cabinet cavities. Focus on kitchen and bathroom sinks along outside walls.
Let faucets drip. A slow, steady drip from faucets served by vulnerable pipes keeps water moving and relieves pressure buildup if ice does begin to form. You do not need a strong stream — just a pencil-lead-thin flow from both hot and cold lines. Prioritize faucets farthest from where water enters your home.
Keep your thermostat at 65°F or higher — even at night, and even if you leave town. The cost of extra heating is minimal compared to water damage repair. If you are leaving during a potential freeze, never set your thermostat below 55°F.
Open your attic access door or hatch slightly to allow warm air from your living space to rise into the attic where pipes may be exposed. This simple step can make a meaningful difference for attic-routed supply lines.
If you have a garage water heater, keep the garage door closed throughout the freeze. If your garage does not seal well, consider placing a space heater (safely away from flammable materials) to keep temperatures above freezing near exposed pipes.
What to Do If Your Pipes Freeze
If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle or nothing comes out during freezing weather, a pipe has likely frozen. Do not panic — a frozen pipe has not necessarily burst yet. How you respond in the next few minutes matters.
Keep the faucet open. As ice melts, water needs somewhere to flow. An open faucet also helps relieve pressure in the line.
Apply gentle heat to the frozen section if you can locate and access it. Use a hair dryer, heat lamp, warm towels, or portable space heater aimed at the frozen area. Start from the faucet side and work back toward the frozen section. Never use an open flame, propane torch, or blowtorch — these can damage pipes and create a fire hazard.
Check for leaks as the pipe thaws. Once water flow resumes, inspect the area for dripping, spraying, or wet spots that indicate a crack or burst. If you find a leak, shut off the main water supply immediately and call a licensed plumber.
If a pipe has burst, shut off the main water valve, turn off the water heater (to prevent damage from running dry), and begin documenting the damage with photos for your insurance claim. Move valuables away from water, and contact a plumber as soon as possible.
When Pipe Protection Is Not Enough: The Case for Repiping
If your Houston home has older pipes — especially galvanized steel, polybutylene, or aging copper with visible corrosion — freeze protection measures are a temporary fix for a larger problem. Corroded pipes are weaker, more brittle, and far more likely to fail during a freeze event.
